Online webinar awareness session on organ donation conducted for the employees and officers of BHEL, Noida, UP

On June 29, 2020, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an online webinar awareness session on organ donation for the employees and officers of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, PEM (Project Engineering Management) in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The session’s coverage was PAN India across 30 BHEL offices. The session was organized by Mr. Pradeep Paul, Deputy Manager, CIVIL BHEL PEM. Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi was the resource person.

Project Engineering Management (PEM) Division is Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited’s power plant System Integrator, a nodal agency providing total engineering solutions for conventional thermal and gas based power projects and conventional island of nuclear power plant, enabling BHEL to offer complete Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services for power projects.

The session began with Ms. Neha Sharma (Deputy Manager) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, introducing Dr. Muneet as the speaker and invited her to begin the session. Dr. Muneet spoke about her association with MOHAN Foundation and its role in creating awareness in the field of organ donation since 1997.

She then asked the attendees “Why the need to donate organs?” Many people answered and wrote their replies in the chat box. Some of the replies were, a needy will get an organ and his/her life will be saved. Organs and tissues can be reused in others and thus give a second chance to live.

Dr. Muneet stressed on the need to donate organs as it is the need of the hour. Thousands of people in India are waiting for organs but unfortunately India lags behind in relation to other countries where the wait for an organ is shorter. India’s organ donation rate is 0.80 per million population which is unfortunately very low in comparison to other European countries especially Spain whose organ donation rate is 50 per million population. She explained to the attendees the “Opt in” and “Opt out” consent process followed the world over and enumerated the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a simple powerpoint presentation. The following topics were explained in detail:

  • Organ donation and its need in the society
  • When and how does organ donation take place
  • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
  • Transplant waiting list in India
  • Brain death
  • Difference between brain death and coma
  • Transplant Law
  • Eye donation

While on the subject of brain death, a movie was shown to give clarity on the difference between brain death and coma. Myths and facts on organ donation were also discussed.

The participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and wrote many questions in the chat box. To name a few: 

  • What is the number of people in the waiting list for organs in India?
  • Can cancer patients donate their organs?
  • Can a person donate eyes if he has undergone a cataract operation?
  • Can a person recover from brain death?
  • Identity like the name of the recipient, is it disclosed to donor family?
  • Can artificial organs be used for transplantation?
  • What is the daily cost of Immunosuppressant drugs? Is there any Government scheme that gives free supply of Immunosuppressants to the poor?

Dr. Muneet also explained the importance of eye donation and the whole process of eye donation. She motivated the audience to pledge for organ and eye donation. She also explained the process of how one can pledge to be an organ donor. 

At the end of the session, Mr. Anil Joshi, Executive Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited gave the vote of thanks and presented a “Certificate of Appreciation’’ to Dr. Muneet.

The session went on for an hour and close to 35 participants attended the session.
