Seminar on Organ Donation at SDM Hospital, Dharwad

A seminar on organ donation was organised at SDM Hospital in association with MOHAN Foundation and Jeevasarthakathe at Kalakshetra in Dharwad district on 4th October 2019.

The seminar began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Dr. S K Joshi - Vice Chancellor SDM University, Dr. Ratnamala M Desai - Principal SDM CMSH, Dr. P Satyashankar - Medical Superintendent, SDM CMSH and Dr. Akkamahadevi A S - HOD Dept. of Nephrology, Dr. Hemal Kanvinde - Quality Assurance Officer and Mr. Shridhar Hanchinal - Director from MOHAN Foundation.

Dr. Nagaraj Naik delivered the welcome speech followed by Ms. Sheetal Mundada of MOHAN Foundation giving an introduction about deceased organ donation, myths, other relevant facts and the registration process to be an organ donor. Mr. Naushad Pasha, Transplant Coordinator from Jeevsarthakathe, then explained the role of Jeevsarthakathe in organ donation in Karnataka.

A video of Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, a neurosurgeon explaining brain death, GCS, clinical and Apnea test to certify brain death was played for the audience. Using a case study grief counselling techniques were explained to the participants. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde then spoke about understanding a recipient's mind-set and explained the protocol in deceased donation which is followed by the  hospitals.

An information stall for people who wanted to register as organ donors was set up as part of the seminar. Around 900 students and faculty were part of the seminar and more than 250 people registered as organ donors. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Mr. Naushad Pasha and Ms. Sheetal Mundada were honoured as the event came to a close. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Mahesh Bennikal – Nephrologist, SDM Hospital.
