Organ donation awareness programmes were conducted by MOHAN Foundation at the In-service Police Training Centres in Trichy and Thanjavur on 31^st October 2019 in the morning and late afternoon respectively. Recently promoted Inspectors and the Sub Inspectors were the audience and Mr. Venkatesh, Transplant Coordinator – Government Rajaji Hospital and Mr. Siva Shankar, Marketing Coordinator from the Foundation were the speakers.

Mr. Siva Shankar started the session by explaining the basics of organ donation. He explained the following in detail:

• Organ donation and its need in the society
• When and how does organ donation take place
• Transplants performed so far in Tamil Nadu and Government transplant waitlist
• Meaning of death and law on death
• Transplant Law
• Organs that can be donated during life and after death

Mr Venkatesh then explained the role of police in organ donation. He elaborated on the following points:

• What do the police have to in an organ donation case?
• When does the involvement of police begin during an organ donation case in a hospital?
• The forms that are given by the transplant coordinator to the officials to be filled and submitted

The session in Trichy had 12 police officials participating and Thanjavur saw 20 officials in attendance.

Some questions asked by the officials:

• What is the role of MOHAN Foundation in Organ Donation?
• What is the protocol to be followed if there is a delay in the arrival of the police officers at the hospital?
• When will the Postmortem be done?
