Organ Donation Awareness for members of a Youth Group at Anna Nagar Tower Park, Chennai

On September 1st 2019, MOHAN Foundation was invited by Mr. K. Rama Subramaniyan, Volunteer from Indian National Development and Reformation Association (INDRA) at Anna Nagar Tower Park to deliver a talk on organ donation. Welcome address was delivered by Mr. Abhay, Volunteer of INDRA Trust. The programme started by 4:45 PM and around 60 students participated. Ms. R. Juhija, Bio-Statistician, assisted by. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer from MOHAN Foundation spoke on the subject of organ donation and transplantation. She explained the Transplantation of Human Organs Act which included the offences and penalties related to malpractices in organ donation.

 

Ms. Juhija spoke on the following topics:

  • MOHAN Foundation and its activities
  • Organ failure and causes
  • Who can donate organs?
  • When can organs be donated?
  • What is living donation?
  • What is natural death and brain death?
  • What is brain death and coma?
  • Age criteria to donate organs
  • What is the time period for organ retrieval?
  • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation

 

The students participated actively and came up with lot of questions. Few questions asked by the students were:

  • What is the difference between brain death and coma?
  • Is there any interlink between donor registry and organ allocation?

 

All their doubts were clarified by Ms. Juhija. 42 people registered as organ donors and received their donor cards. The programme came to an end at 5.30 PM with Mr. Abhay delivering the vote of thanks. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to INDRA Trust for the opportunity to create awareness among the youth of the city.
