Awareness session on organ donation for the Nurses of Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram

On June 29, 2019, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram. It was organized by nursing education department exclusively for nurses. Ms. Shafia Hameed coordinated the session and Dr. Pallavi Rekhi was the resource person for the session.

Artemis Hospital is the first JCI and NABH accredited hospital in Gurugram,  India. With an area spread across 9 acres, the hospital houses 380 beds. Established in 2007, Artemis Hospital is a super-specialty hospital in Gurugram. In 2011 it received the ‘Asia Pacific Hand Hygiene Excellence Award’ by WHO.

Ms. Pallavi introduced herself, the foundation and its activities. She began the session by showing a motivational video clip on organ donation and asked the participants if they had heard or discussed about organ donation ever before. The participants shared their views on how certain myths and religious beliefs stop one from donating their organs.

Further she cleared the concept of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a powerpoint presentation. While talking about brain death, a short video on brain stem death was shown to participants that explained how coma is different from brain death. She also spoke about the low organ donation rate of our country (0.8 pmp) which is not even one per million population.

Overall the session was quite interesting and interactive. Close to 90 nurses attended the session.
