MOHAN Foundation sets up Stall at a Bio-Medical Engineering Appliances Exhibition

KUTUHAL (Know, Understand, Test, Use, Health Appliances & Learn) an exhibition of bio-medical engineering appliances was set up at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur from 9th to 11th Feb 2019. Along with VNIT, Indian Medical Association, National Cancer Institute and Vigyan Bharti had organized the exhibition which was inaugurated by Union Mnister Mr. Nitin Gadkari.

As a part of this event, MOHAN Foundation also set up an information stall, decked up with banners and standees. Six stalls were allocated to the Foundation out of the 157 that were set up to explain various aspects of bio-engineering  and the relationship between medical and engineering fields to the exhibition visitors. All the top doctors of the city had voluntarily agreed to take time off their schedules to be available at the stalls to answer questions.

The organ donation awareness program was jointly organized by MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur and Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC) Nagpur. Dr. Ravi Wankhede Director of MOHAN Foundation & Secretary of ZTCC, Nagpur, Dr. Vibhawari Dani Director of ZTCC, Nagpur, Mrs. Veena Wathore ZTCC Transplant Coordinator & Mr. Bulu Behera Transplant Coordinator were present at the Foundation’s stall. An award-winning exhibit titled ‘Life Before Ashes’ comprising human organs modeled using human ashes was also on display in the stall.

Information on the following points were given to the visitors:

  • History of transplant
  • Types of death
  • Organs and tissues that could be donated after brain death, natural death and while living
  • Where is the waiting list for organ failure patients available and how to register in it?
  • Who can be an organ donor and the value of donor cards
  • MOHAN Foundation activities and its website
  • Information about the Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994
  • Myths related to organ donation

The following are a few questions that the visitors had:

  • After natural death what is the process for donating eyes?
  • How does MOHAN Foundation benefit from its work?
  • How many patients are in the waiting list in Nagpur requiring liver?
  • Where is MOHAN Foundation’s office in Nagpur?
  • How will MOHAN Foundation get to know about my death?
  • What is the process for whole body donation?
  • What difference between coma and brain death?

Approximately 6000 visitors visited the stall across the 3 days. After understanding organ donation, around 330 visitors signed consent forms and received their donor cards. Many others promised that they will do so after seeking the consent of their families.
