Awareness session on organ donation at Reckitt Benckiser, Gurugram

On August 24, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Reckitt Benckiser (RB), Gurugram. Dr Pallavi Rekhi took the initiative to get this talk organized in RB and Ms. Arundhati Ganesan (Regional Compensation & Benefits Manager, RB) coordinated it. The resource person for the session was Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager, MF Delhi- NCR).

Reckitt Benckiser Group is a British multinational consumer goods company headquartered in Slough, England and has operations in around 60 countries. RB organizes the majority of its products into three main categories – health, hygiene and home – with other brands belonging to three further categories: food, pharmaceuticals & portfolio brands.

The session began with participants sharing their knowledge about organ donation. Dr. Muneet tried to fill in the gaps in their level of understanding regarding the same. She explained the possible reasons for other countries having a much higher Organ Donation Rate (ODR) than India. She also spoke about the different consent systems i.e., opt-in & opt-out followed all over the world. The audience was surprised to know that not everybody who wishes to donate their organs can do so. Dr Muneet explained the term ‘brain-death’ with the help of a short video.

The participants were really intrigued and had lot of queries. To list a few:

1. Is my donor card valid all over the country?

2. Is brain death the same as coma?

3. What is the importance of carrying a donor card?

The participants were very enthusiastic and interactive. The session ended with a motivational video on organ donation.

Close to 25 participants attended the session and around 10 forms (Form 7) were picked up.
