Organ donation awareness talk at Impact Paramedical & Health Institute, Delhi

On July 23, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation for the students of Impact Paramedical & Health Institute, Paschim Vihar, Delhi. Dr. Anjali Bihani (Vice-Principal, IPHI) organised the session and Ms. Anindita Sabath (Transplant Coordinator, MF Delhi-NCR) coordinated it and was also the resource person for the session.

Impact Paramedical & Health Institute has been very ambitiously established to supply well-educated and highly skilled paramedical/allied health professionals and staff in almost all disciplines of the medical and the healthcare sector of India and abroad.

Ms. Anindita began the session by asking a few introductory questions to the participants to determine their knowledge about organ donation. She then started her presentation by explaining about organ donation followed by when can organs be donated, who can donate organs and most importantly why is it so necessary to donate organs.

The concept of brain death was very well explained by Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager, MF Delhi-NCR). A video on brain death was shown to the participants to get a better understanding about the topic.

Ms. Anindita then gave a brief idea about the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act, 1994 and tried to give clarity on the myths and misconceptions around organ donation with their corresponding reality checks. The process of corneal donation and how each participant can spread awareness on tissue donation was also discussed.

The participants had few queries which were answered effectively by Dr. Sahi and Ms. Anindita. To name a few:

  • How can a person decide about donating his/her organs after dying?
  • Can a transplanted organ be re-transplanted?
  • Whom should we contact for corneal donation?
  • How is the empty space filled that is left, after the retrieval of the organ?

At the end of the session, a motivational video on organ donation was played. Dr. Anjali Bihani showed interest in conducting such sessions in other centres of IPHI across Delhi.

Close to 80 participants attended the session and 2 forms (Form – 7) were picked up.
