Angels of Change Volunteer Training for the students of MMM College of Allied Health Science

MOHAN Foundation, Chennai had its 9th Angels of Change Volunteer Training Program for the students Medical Sociology, Madras Medical Mission (MMM) College of Allied Health Science on 17th July 2018, 10 am. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer, Mr. T. S. Siva Shankar, Helpline Executive and Mr. Ruban Victor, Transplant Coordinator took the session.

The session started with a self-introduction by all 12 students. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde gave an introduction about MOHAN Foundation, the opportunity for internship, about the volunteer training and other activities of the organization. Followed by the introduction she conducted a mind mapping exercise to initiate the topic of organ donation.

The session was handed over to Mr. Siva Shankar to talk on the concepts of Organ Donation. Before the start of the session he conducted a small quiz which is based on medical facts and news. The quiz resulted in the students showing interest towards the concepts. He gave a brief introduction to the following during his talk:

  1. Organ Donation and its law
  2. Brain Death and its causes
  3. Organs that can be donated by a living person and deceased person
  4. Age criteria on organ donation
  5. The organ donation Helpline number

The session went on for about 35 minutes adding to that Mr. Siva Shankar conducted a small quiz on Tamil films featuring organ donation. This made the students enjoy the session to the fullest.

The session was then taken over by Mr. Ruban Victor. He explained in a detailed manner the protocol that is followed by the hospital when there is a brain death case. He shared the role of the hospital staff during the donation. He stressed the important role transplant coordinators play during a brain death case.

As part of the communication workshop, a heart recipient video was screened; the students were asked to read the stories of donors and write a thank you letter to the family of the donor. The best letters were rewarded with a small gift.

The students were divided into three groups such as events, survey and public awareness groups. Each group was given an independent activity. The students from the public awareness group studied a pre-designed presentation on organ donation with the aim of giving a mock session on the concept. The survey group students were given predesigned survey and asked to meet the public at bus stops and small shops. They were expected to come up with a report of the survey. The events team was asked to plan a few events to promote the cause of organ donation among the public. All the volunteers then completed their tasks and explained to the entire group what they learnt.

The session ended with a feedback session and a group photo with the MOHAN Foundation staff and the students.  This is not the end! They will be undergoing the training program for one more day and these students will be joining MOHAN Foundation as interns.
