​Awareness talk on organ donation at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram

​On July 02, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram. Flt. Lt. Saras Malik (HR Head) and Mr Paramjeet Singh (Training Head) organised the session and Ms Pallavi Sood (Transplant Coordinator, MF Delhi-NCR) coordinated it. Dr​.​ Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager, MF Delhi-NCR) was the resource person. Employees from HR department, patient care services, doctors, physiotherapist, nurses & paramedical staff attended the session.

 

Dr. Muneet began the session by asking a few introductory questions to the participants to gauge their knowledge about the topic. All of them knew about organ donation very few knew about brain-death or donor card with the exception of doctors. Basic concepts of organ donation, the five W's (why, who, what, when and where) and how of organ donation and transplantation was explained in a simple and easily comprehensible manner. Additional information regarding conditions & standards for grant of certificate of registration of a hospital for organ or tissue transplantation centre was also given. Artemis is a registered centre for liver, kidney and cornea transplantation. One of the cardiac anaesthetists attending the session informed that the hospital has also acquired license for heart transplantation.

 

Other topics that were discussed were, consent systems that are followed the world over, i.e. Opt-in and opt-out. India follows opt-in system where only those people who have given explicit consent for organ donation are donors. Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act, 1994 was also discussed, an act that has put in place a wide range of actions at donor, recipient, doctor, hospital & regulatory body levels. A query from Dr. S. Jayalakshmi (Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology) about green corridor that it refers to a route that is demarcated and cleared out for an ambulance carrying harvested organs with the objective to ensure that the in-transit organ arrives at its destination in the shortest time possible was also addressed. Common myths & misconceptions around organ donation with their corresponding reality check was also shared with the participants.

 

It was a very engaging and an interactive session. Close to 60 participants attended the session and 29 forms (Form-7) were picked up.
