MOHAN Foundation in partnership with AORTA (Army Organ Retrieval & Transplant Authority) under the aegis of Office of DGMS (Army) IHQ of MoD (Army) and NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization) successfully completed the training on ‘TRANSPLANT COORDINATION’ from July 24-28, 2017 held at Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Delhi Cantonment, New Delhi. This was the second training held in partnership with AORTA under the guidance of Brig. A K Sood (Director, AORTA). This training was supported by the TATA Trusts and Army Medical Corps.

 

30 delegates of varied profiles that included doctors and nurses, medical social workers, senior managers, medical superintendent and counselors from 5 states (Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh) and 1 Union Territory, Delhi attended the training.

 

The transplant coordinators training programme started with an inaugural function where the chief guest was Lt Gen Bipin Puri, VSM, PHS, DGMS (Army). Organ donation rate of India, transporting of organs through air traffic in the shortest possible time were few of the important points addressed during the inaugural.

 

More than 24 eminent speakers and experienced professionals from the medical/non-medical fraternity conducted sessions on: -

•      Introduction to Organ Transplant

•      Basic concept of organ donation

•      History of Transplant

•      Organ Donation & Transplant Organizations

•      THOA

•      NOTP & NOTTO (registry/allocation/sharing)

•      AORTA

•      Qualities & role of a Transplant Coordinator

•      Basics of heart/liver/kidney/pancreas/ failure & transplant

•      Tissue Transplant (cornea/skin/bone/heart valves)

•      Counseling/role plays

•      Public awareness/media engagement

 

A panel discussion was held on the last day. The panelists were Maj General Navdeep Lamba, Deputy Commandant, Mr. Rajiv Kumar ACP, Delhi Area, Mrs. Sunyana Singh, CEO Organ India and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, MOHAN Foundation. It was moderated by Brig A K Sood who put the main point of discussion on ‘Pitfalls on Organ Donation in India’. The queries of the participants were addressed on issues like, role of army to bridge the wide gap between demand and supply of organs, major cause of low organ donation rate and role of police to facilitate procedures regarding organ donation in medico- legal cases.

 

In the end, Lt Gen A K Das, Commandant, Army Hospital (R&R) gave away certificates to all the delegates who successfully completed the course.
