National Organ Donor Day celebrated at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai

To mark “Indian Organ Donation Week”, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), Chennai in association with Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) organized awareness events to spread the message across the general public on 23rd and 24th November 2016. The events were coordinated by MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinators Periyanayagam P. and Mr. Ragavan R. deputed at the RGGGH to facilitate the deceased organ donation programme.

Day 1 - 23rd November 2016 - Awareness kiosk on organ donation

The awareness campaign was started with an awareness kiosk was set at the RGGGH on 23rd November 2016.   The stall had IEC materials on organ donation such as information brochure, posters, pledge registration forms, donor cards, etc., Slides on organ donation and awareness videos were screened for the public to watch. The transplant coordinators explained the concepts of organ donation to the visitors. More than 500 visitors came forward to support the noble cause and picked up a donor card.   

Day 2 - 24th November 2016 – Organ Donation Awareness Street Play

On 24th November 2016, there was a performance of street theatre on importance of organ donation within the hospital campus. This was to educate the public on organ donation.  Student volunteers from various colleges performed the street play on “Want to become a Hero? Donate your Organs”. Dr. Muralidharan, Dean, Madras Medical College, Dr. Sheela Rani, Medical Superintendent, RGGGH, Dr. Elango & Dr. Thirunavukkarasu, Residential Medical Officers and several other senior doctors were present during the street play. The street play was a great success and helped in reaching more than 1500 people including student doctors, paramedical staff and the public. The play was performed at different locations (as below) within the campus.

  • Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery
