MOHAN Foundation organized Organ donation Awareness Program Police Training College in Ashok Nagar, Chennai on 6^th October 2016.  Nearly 31 police trainees from a refresher course  at  Avadi  PRS  attended the session.

The main objective of the session is to understand

1. The concept of brain death.

2. The role of police in organ donation and police inquest for the post mortem.

Ms. Sunitha Velankanni A.T, Transplant coordinator, MOHAN Foundation handled the session assisted by Ms. Jaya Nalini. R and Mr. Abhinav Krishna T.R. The session started with an interaction session.

First she asked what is donation, who can donate, what can be donated. A few of the trainees responded and based on that she began to explain about organ donation and its process, what is deceased organ donation, age criteria, who is eligible to declare the brain death and importance of family consent for organ retrieval.

The next session was on Legal procedures for the brain death cases. She explained about the importance of the role of police during the organ retrieval, early submission of investigation report for the post mortem. She explained the Law, offenses & penalties and the TN Government orders on organ donation.  

Participant asked so many queries regarding organ donation, family consent, legal formalities, allocation of organ, where can register as a patient, cost of the organ transplant etc. Sunitha explained and answered all the queries.

Finally they understood the concept of brain death & the importance of police in investigation and early submission of post mortem report. Brochures were distributed for all participants to understand the concept well. They also said the session was quite good and informative & useful for them. Donor cards were left with their senior trainer.
