Organ Donation Awareness talk at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Chennai

On 27th May 2016 MOHAN Foundation was invited by the CSR wing of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Greams Road, Chennai for an awareness talk on organ donation. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer and Susmitha Menon, Intern, represented MOHAN Foundation.

The session started with a motivational film, followed by a presentation by Susmitha on organ donation- why, when, where and how. Susmitha explained the need for donation, brain death and which organs can be donated. She gave an overview of the work of MOHAN Foundation and explained the value of a donor card. Dr. Hemal explained the concepts of organ allocation and distribution and also addressed the queries of the participants.

The queries were about expense of transplantation, interstate distribution, legal aspects of living donations, criteria to become a living donor and his health after donation, results of transplantation, registries of donors and recipients and certification of brain death.

Out of the 20 employees who attended the session only one had heard about brain death.  One employee shared a story of his aunt donating a kidney to her daughter and how the donor is still healthy, and another shared how his friend in Orissa died waiting for government approval for a donation from his family member.  These personal stories played a role in making the concept more real to the audience. 14 of them picked up the donor card and 10 of them wished to be a volunteer with MOHAN Foundation.
