Counselling and approaching the bereaved families for organ donation

On 3rd August 2015, MOHAN Foundation was invited by BALM (The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health, Chennai) to interact with its students on “Counselling and approaching the bereaved families for organ donation”. The programme was organized for students pursuing M.A in Applied Psychology as part of their course work.

The programme started with the session on concepts of organ donation. The medical, legal and ethical, cultural and belief, socio-economic factors related to organ donation and transplantation were explained to the students.

The second part of the programme was counselling the bereaved families and approaching them for organ donation. The students were educated on the following - grief and its stages, counselling process, the skills and characteristics of a counsellor, when and how to approach the families for organ donation. A few case studies were also shared with the students for better understanding. The students had a lot of queries about ethical views on living donor transplants, organ allocation guidelines, grief counselling process and the scope for the transplant coordinators. All their queries were answered. Around 25 students attended the programme and showed their support for the cause by pledging a donor card.
