CME on Brain Death Declaration in Government Hospitals at Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad

MOHAN Foundation in partnership with Jeevandan organized the first ever CME exclusively for the doctors, staff and faculty of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Gandhi Hospital, and Osmania General Hospital (Government Teaching Hospitals) on 13th June 2015. The meeting was the first initiative of its kind in Hyderabad that was organised with an objective of sensitizing the government hospitals on deceased organ donation in the state by bringing together all the medical professionals from Government hospitals.

 

The following were the core speakers: Sri. Suresh Chanda, IAS, Principal Health Secretary, Govt. Of Telangana, Dr. Ramani (Director of Medical Education), Dr. Amalorpavanathan (Convenor, Cadaver Transplant Program, Govt. of Tamil Nadu), Dr. Raghavendran (HOD, Professor of Neurology, Changalpattu Medical College), Dr. Swarnalatha (In-Charge Jeevandan), Dr. Raghuram (Medical Superintendent, Osmania General Hospital), Dr. Venkatesh (Medical Superintendent, Gandhi Hospital), Dr. Manisha Sahay (HOD Nephrology, Osmania General Hospital), Dr. Madhusudhan (HOD, Surgical Gastroenterology, Osmania General Hospital), Dr. Sri Ranga Lakshmi (HOD neurology, Osmania General Hospital), Dr. Srinivas (Professor of Neurology, Gandhi Hospital), Sri. Pratap Narayan Sanghi (Senior Advocate), Sri. L.S. Chouhan, IPS (Deputy Commissioner of Police).

 

The meeting was attended by more than 150 doctors, transplant coordinators, forum members, and other medical professionals. Dr. Amalorpavanathan spoke on the strategies of implementing the program in government hospitals and also spoke in detail on the success of the program in Tamil Nadu. Dr. Raghavendran spoke on the intricacies of brain death declaration and legal issues involved in brain death declaration.

 

There was a panel discussion on the legal and ethical issues in implementing deceased organ donation in government hospitals chaired by Sri. Suresh Chanda, Principal Health Secretary and assured that government is ready to support the government hospitals in implementing deceased organ donation and transplantation program in all government hospitals. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Manisha Sahay The doctors and other team members involved in first liver transplantation in Osmania General Hospital were felicitated on this occasion.
