A Florence Nightingale Forever - A Nurse's Organ Donation Story

We have only read and heard a lot about Florence Nightingale.  Every nursing tutor teaches their students to serve their patients like Florence Nightingale.  And, this is what Sravanthi did in her death.

Sravanthi, all of 24, an active, bubbly and extremely helpful Nurse working in Cardio-thoracic ICU at Star Hospitals, Hyderabad, did the unthinkable.  On the night of 28th May, she was rushed to Star Hospitals in an unconscious state without pulse, blood pressure and respiration while she was shopping along with her brother. She was put on ventilator immediately and the doctors did everything to save their very dear colleague.  Unfortunately, she did not recover and was declared “Brain Dead” on 2nd June 2010.

Sravanthi’s father, Sri. Thirupathaiah, is a Mining Sardar at Singareni Colleries.  He fondly remembers Sravanthi as a very conscientious person and a pillar of support for the family.  “Nobody can fill the void she has left.  We are glad that at least, she can live in another five people”, he said with his eyes welled up.  Doctors and nurses in Star Hospitals remember her as an affable and duty minded nurse.

Her uncle, Sri. Ramesh is a Red Cross member, and knew about organ donation and its benefits to the society. The family came forward to donate Shravanthi's organs. Star Hospitals' Management took the help of MOHAN Foundation for this noble cause . Sravanthi’s kidneys, liver and heart valves were retrieved early hours of 3rd June and transplanted on patients that have been eagerly waiting for donor organs for a long time.

Dr. Gopichand Mannam, Chairman & Managing Director of Star Hospitals says, “at our hospital, we have always believed that nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something, and that is what Sravanthi has done.  We are proud of her”.
