On April 15, 2015, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the graduate and post graduate students of Social Work in the meeting room, Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

 

The initiative for the session was taken by Dr. Rashmi Jain (Assistant Professor-Department of Social Work) who supports organ donation and feels that it is a noble cause to promote.

 

Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in !988. In Urdu language, Jamia means 'University,' and Milia means 'National'. It has Education, Humanities & Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering & Technology and Law faculties. Besides its faculties, the Jamia has a number of centres of learning and research also.

 

The session was taken by Dr. Muneet who explained the concepts of organ donation and transplantation like what is organ donation, difference between brain death and cardiac death, instances in which organ donation can be done and the THOA Act to the participants. She also spoke on eye donation and how it can be promoted at an individual level. A film on brain death was also screened to clarify the concept of brain death to the participants.

 

It was a very interactive session wherein the participants asked various queries but also listened intently. One participant shared with the group that her parents had pledged their eyes.

 

35 students attended the session and 16 donor cards were picked up.
