On 6th January 2015, Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) was invited by National Institute of Speech and Hearing, Trivandrum (NISH) to conduct an awareness session on Organ donation as part of their monthly assembly. The objective of the monthly assembly was to empower the student to be socially responsible. Encouraging and motivating the students to be more productive and innovative and to develop leadership qualities among students.

 

 

NISH is an autonomous body under the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala. NISH is a comprehensive multi-purpose institute focusing on the identification, rehabilitation, education of the individuals with communication disorders. The activities of NISH include multi-disciplinary assessment and intervention for various communication disabilities including a team of audiologists, speech language pathologists, physiotherapists, psychologists, ENT surgeon and Neurologist and early intervention programs for young hearing impaired children.

            Ms Chinnu, student from NISH welcomed the speakers and the audiences to the meeting. After the welcome speech Dr Samuel N Mathew, Executive Director, NISH delivered New Year message for the students. The speech was followed by a talk on Road Safety by Mr Nazer, Retd. Chief Engineer, PWD. He spoke on the rules to be followed while driving. He also shared the statistics of road accidents that happened last year.

 

 

After the session Ms Saranya S, Transplant coordinator, MOHAN Foundation deputed in KNOS, delivered a talk on organ donation and started off with description about KNOS and its functions. She explained about the Objective of KNOS, Transplantation Human Organ act- 1994 and its amendments, Activities of KNOS, how KNOS maintains patient registry, allocation of each organs, Concept of brain death, difference between brain death and cardiac death, organs which can be donated after brain death and cardiac death, importance of carrying donor card, toll free organ donation helpline number etc.  

 

 

After the session Dr Suja V Kunnath, Speech Pathologist delivered the vote of thanks. By the end of the assembly, the Director appreciated the students who took part in All Kerala Sports meet.

 

 

A Speech Language pathologist translated the whole session in to sign language for the students during the class. Around 70 students and staff members were present at the talk.
