Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Dirctor MOHAN Foundation Nagpur was invited by the Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer Lt. Nitin Pande (Ex. Indian Navy) to give a talk to the Veterans (Retired servicemen of Army, Navy and Indian Air Force) on organ donation at a annual get together held at the historic & scenic Military Garrison (Fort), Nagpur on 9th November 2014.

 

Dr. Wankhede gave a talk on the organs and tissue which could be donated while living and after death. He emphasized the need to donate eyes as well as skin to the soon to be opened skin bank at Nagpur. He spoke about the 'brain death', wherein several organs and tissues could be donated to save the lives of organ failure patients.

 

Dr. Ravi Wankhede had invited Havaldar (Retired) Sanjay Kumar Singh and his wife from Chandameta, Taluka Parasia in Madhya Pradesh a neighbouring State for the event. Their son had sustained head injury due to an accident. He was shifted to Nagpur. After a few days hospitalization, he was pronounced 'brain dead'. Being an Ex. Army man Sanjay Singh was aware of organ donation after Brain death. He and his family themselves offered to get his sons organs donated. After all the medico-legal formalities, Amit's two kidneys and eyes were donated on 4th April 2013. This was the first successful case of Deceased Organ Donation in Central India.

 

The parents were felicitated by the Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer as well as  by Dr. Ravi Wankhede on behalf of MOHAN Foundation.

 

Approximately 200 hundreds participants participated in the program more than 100 take consent forms and 13 people picked the donor card.
