Session on “LIFE AFTER DEATH” for the Nursing Students at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital

On 18th & 19th March 2014 Organ Donation awareness talk was organized by MOHAN Foundation for the nurses in the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai. The session was conducted by Transplant Coordinators - Ms. Sunitha, Mr. Prakash, and Mr. Jeyabal in the intensive Medical Care Unit and N6 ward (Neurology Department). The aim was to sensitize the nurses on the concepts of organ donation.


The session started with the interaction on different aspects of  organ donation to know their level of understanding about Brain Death and Organ Donation. Totally 28 nursing students participated in the talk. During the session Ms. Sunitha gave a talk on the important of organ donation and following topics:

  • Who can be a donor
  • What is Natural Death
  • What is Brain Death
  • Who can certify Brain Death
  • What are the differences between Brain death and Coma
  • What organs and the tissues can be donated after Brain Death
  • Roles and responsibility of nurses in maintaining a potential brain death donor
  • Apnea Test (Confirmation Test)
  • Time Factor (gap between harvest and retrieval)
  • Organ Allocation
  • Transplant coordinator training programme
  • Importance of a Donor card and toll free helpline


All the nurses showed their support by signing the donor card and few of them were interested to join transplant coordination training programme.
