Awareness Session on Organ and Tissue Donation at Mohamed Sathak AJ College of Nursing |
|
On July 17, MOHAN Foundation conducted an Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Session for the 2nd and 3rd year nursing students at Mohamed Sathak AJ College of Nursing. Around 95 nursing students participated in the session. The programme commenced with an introductory video on the concept of organ donation. This was followed by a session on cornea donation awareness by Ms. Kanishka, Project Executive, who explained the structure and function of the cornea, corneal blindness, the need for cornea donation, the cornea donation process, precautions to be taken, and common myths and facts associated with cornea donation. The next session was delivered by Dr. Hemal, Quality Assurance Officer, who spoke on organ donation awareness. The presentation covered the laws governing organ donation, types of death, types of donors, inspiring recipient stories, the organ donation process, and the procedure for pledging to become an organ donor. The session also included a brief overview of the history of transplantation. This was followed by the screening of a brain death awareness video and the story of Sushma, a kidney transplant recipient, highlighting the life-changing impact of organ donation. Dr. Hemal then conducted an interactive session on transplantation through real-life case studies and grief counselling. He explained various transplant scenarios, rare cases handled by transplant coordinators, and the importance of counselling donor families with empathy and sensitivity. The programme concluded with an engaging Tamil movie quiz conducted by Ms. Kanishka. The quiz highlighted common myths about organ donation portrayed in Tamil cinema and clarified the facts, helping students distinguish between fiction and reality. MOHAN Foundation expressed its sincere gratitude to Dr. Safeena, Principal, and Ms. Deepa, Vice Principal, for providing the opportunity and extending their support in organizing the awareness session. |
