Strengthening Organ and Tissue Donation : MOHAN Foundation Conducts Workshop on Best Practices in Ranchi, Jharkhand |

On June 16, 2026 under the aegis of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Jharkhand, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with Manipal Organ Sharing and Transplant (MOST), organized a one-day workshop on "Best Practices in Organ and Tissue Donation" at Ramada, Ranchi. Around 105 people attended the workshop including policymakers, senior government officials, healthcare leaders, transplant experts, clinicians, hospital administrators, nurses, transplant coordinators, grief counsellors, and representatives from government and private healthcare institutions across Jharkhand to strengthen the state's deceased organ and tissue donation programme. The event served as an important platform for sharing knowledge, strengthening institutional preparedness, improving referral mechanisms, and promoting coordinated efforts among key stakeholders. The workshop was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Shri Hemant Soren, who attended as the Chief Guest. The Hon'ble Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Dr. Irfan Ansari, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour, while Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Government of Jharkhand, attended as the Distinguished Guest. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to promote deceased organ donation through sustained public awareness and stronger healthcare systems, while the Health Minister reiterated the Government's commitment to adopting successful organ donation models and best practices from across the country to establish a robust organ donation ecosystem in Jharkhand. Welcoming the participants, Ms. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, MOHAN Foundation, highlighted the importance of awareness generation, capacity building, and collaboration among stakeholders to improve organ and tissue donation programmes. Dr. B.P. Kashyap, Chairman, Kashyap Eye Memorial Hospital, delivered the inaugural address, emphasizing institutional commitment towards organ donation. The keynote address by Dr. (Col.) Avnish Seth, Country Head, MOST, focused on strengthening hospital-based organ donation programmes through early identification of potential donors, timely referrals, brain stem death certification, and coordinated multidisciplinary teamwork. The technical sessions covered the complete continuum of deceased organ and tissue donation, including the current scenario and future roadmap for organ and tissue donation, brain stem death determination and the legal framework, neurocritical care and donor management, early donor identification and referral mechanisms, grief counselling and family approach, eye donation and corneal transplantation, skin donation and skin banking, and strategies for developing sustainable hospital-based organ donation programmes. The sessions provided participants with practical guidance, evidence-based practices, and valuable insights drawn from successful organ donation programmes across India. An engaging panel discussion featuring experts from Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), SOTTO Jharkhand, and leading private healthcare institutions focused on strengthening collaboration between government and private hospitals, improving donor identification and referral pathways, enhancing institutional preparedness, building trained multidisciplinary teams, and developing a sustainable state-wide organ and tissue donation framework. The panel emphasized that coordinated efforts among hospitals, government agencies, and transplant organizations are essential for improving organ donation outcomes in Jharkhand. The workshop significantly enhanced the awareness and technical understanding of healthcare professionals regarding deceased organ and tissue donation. It reinforced the importance of early donor identification, standardized hospital protocols for brain stem death determination, regular capacity-building initiatives, stronger coordination between SOTTO, hospitals, and transplant centres, greater collaboration between public and private healthcare institutions, and sustained public awareness programmes to encourage organ donation. The programme concluded with a collective commitment from healthcare professionals, government representatives, partner institutions, and transplant experts to work together towards establishing a robust and sustainable organ and tissue donation programme in Jharkhand. MOHAN Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Government of Jharkhand and SOTTO through continued advocacy, professional training, institutional strengthening, and public awareness initiatives, thereby contributing towards a stronger organ donation ecosystem and giving more patients a second chance at life through the gift of organ and tissue donation.
