Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted at St. Andrew School, Jotsoma |
|
On June 29, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with St. Andrew School, Jotsoma, conducted an awareness session on organ donation as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was conducted by Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland, and attended by Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland.
Mr. Lirenthung briefed the participants about the organisation, its vision, and mission to promote deceased organ donation and transplantation in India.
Ms. Sedekieno continued the session by interacting with the participants and asking whether they had come across any organ donors or transplant recipients. Most participants shared that they had not encountered such cases. She then introduced the concept of organ donation and explained how organ donation can save lives by offering the gift of life to patients in need of transplantation.
During the session, she elaborated on the challenges arising from the shortage of organ donors and explained the various organs and tissues that can be donated, the stages during which donation is possible, and who can become a donor. A video on brain stem death was also screened to help participants understand the difference between brain death and coma. It was explained that patients in a coma cannot become organ donors, as coma is a state of deep unconsciousness from which recovery may still be possible, whereas brain stem death is irreversible and legally recognised as death.
The session also highlighted the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) 1994, which strictly prohibits the buying and selling of human organs and aims to prevent organ trafficking while protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation. It was further explained that the Act recognises brain stem death as a form of death, thereby enabling deceased organ donation with proper consent.
Information on eye donation and whole-body donation was also shared with the participants. In addition, common myths and facts related to organ donation were discussed to help address misconceptions and promote awareness.
The session concluded with an inspiring message: “Your story ends the day you take your last breath, but what if you could pass the baton to someone else for the beginning of a new chapter.”
Close to 52 participants were reached through the session. |
