Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) Survey and Community Sensitization on Organ Donation – Kohima, Nagaland

In June 2026, Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead at MOHAN Foundation Nagaland, and Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive at MOHAN Foundation Kohima, Nagaland, conducted a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) Survey across selected communities in Nagaland. The survey was carried out through direct one-to-one interactions, including household visits and telephonic conversations with participants. These interactions enabled the team to gain valuable insights into the public’s awareness, perceptions, and practices related to organ donation and transplantation.

During the survey period, the team reached a total of 94 individuals and successfully collected 94 completed responses. Alongside the survey, awareness was also created about the work of MOHAN Foundation by sharing information on the organisation’s vision, mission, and ongoing efforts to promote both deceased and living organ donation in Nagaland. Participants were also informed that the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) is working towards the implementation of the Human Organ Retrieval and Transplantation programme, which is expected to benefit the people of the state in the future.

Participants were educated on the significance of organ donation, the growing demand for organ donors in India, and the life-saving and life-enhancing impact of organ and tissue donation for patients awaiting transplantation. During the interactions, it was observed that many individuals, particularly among the older generation, perceived organ donation as being associated with financial gain rather than as a noble humanitarian act. In response, participants were sensitised about the laws governing human organ donation and transplantation, which strictly prohibit the commercial trade of human organs.

The findings of the KAP survey will serve as an important resource for planning future awareness initiatives, advocacy programmes, and community outreach activities aimed at strengthening public understanding and encouraging organ donor registrations across Nagaland.
