Seminar on Organ and Tissue Donation at VHS-MA Chidambaram College and School of Nursing

On June 17, 2026, MOHAN Foundation organized a seminar on Organ and Tissue Donation for first year BSc Nursing at VHS-MA Chidambaram College and School of Nursing, Chennai. The programme was attended by around 67 students and faculty members. Green ribbons and information brochures were distributed to all participants to promote awareness on organ and tissue donation.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by a faculty member, who introduced the MOHAN Foundation team. To provide an introduction to organ donation, a short film by Vijay highlighting the impact of organ donation was screened.

Ms. Kanishka, Project Executive, conducted the first session on Cornea Donation Awareness. She emphasized the importance and need for cornea donation and highlighted the increasing prevalence of corneal blindness among children. She explained precautions to be taken after death, the process of corneal retrieval, and the steps involved in pledging for eye donation.

The second session was conducted by Mrs. Arshiya, Senior Project Executive, on Organ Donation Awareness. She spoke about the legal aspects of organ donation, explained brain death in detail, and discussed the various types of donation, the preservation time of organs, and the process of pledging. Recipient stories were also shared to help participants understand the life-saving impact of organ donation. A video on brain death by Dr. Sandeep was screened to enhance understanding.

During the interactive session, students raised several questions, including:

• Can a person undergoing chemotherapy donate organs?

• Can a living donor lead a normal life after donation?

• Can bones be donated?

• What are the benefits of donating organs?

• Which organs cannot be donated?

• If I have not pledged, can my organs still be donated?

• Can the uterus and ovaries be donated?

To address misconceptions often portrayed in films, a short Tamil movie quiz was conducted, which helped break common myths surrounding organ donation.

Following this, Dr. Hemal Kanvinde conducted a session on Grief Counselling and Case Studies. She explained the stages of grief and discussed the role of nurses and transplant coordinators in grief counselling. To provide a practical understanding, case studies from MOHAN Foundation were discussed with the students.

At the end of the programme, four students expressed their willingness to pledge for cornea donation.

MOHAN Foundation expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. R. Sudha, Principal, Mrs. R. Dhanalakshmi, and the Management of VHS-MA Chidambaram College and School of Nursing for providing the opportunity and extending their valuable support towards the successful conduct of the seminar.
