|
On June 11, 2026, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador of the MOHAN Foundation (Multi-Organ Hope and Advocacy Network), was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation at Seminary Niwas, Duler, Mapusa, Bardez, Goa. Mr. Gabriel expressed his gratitude to Rev. Fr. Mariano Travasso, In-Charge of Seminary Niwas, and the seminarians for the invitation and the opportunity to spread awareness about the noble cause of organ donation. Seminary Niwas is a branch of the Minor Seminary of Our Lady, Saligao-Pilerne, Bardez, Goa. It serves as a residential facility for young men pursuing higher secondary education while discerning a possible vocation to the priesthood and service to the Church. During the interactive session, Mr. Gabriel began by asking the students if they knew what the acronym "MOHAN" stood for. After receiving a variety of responses, he explained that MOHAN stands for Multi-Organ Hope and Advocacy Network, one of India's leading NGOs dedicated to promoting deceased organ donation and transplantation. He spoke about the organization’s mission, its years of service, and its objectives in creating awareness and encouraging organ donation Sharing his personal journey, Mr. Gabriel explained how his family's need for a kidney transplant inspired him to become actively involved in promoting organ donation and educating the public on its life-saving impact. He elaborated on the two categories of organ donation—Living Donation and Deceased Donation—and explained which organs and tissues can be donated by living donors and which can be donated after brain stem death. To make the session engaging, he asked participants questions about organ donation and transplantation services available in Goa. For every correct answer, the seminarians received a MOHAN Foundation keychain engraved with the organization’s toll-free helpline number. Mr. Gabriel also highlighted the hospitals in Goa authorized for organ retrieval and transplantation, informing participants that two hospitals are authorized to perform corneal transplants and three are authorized for kidney transplants. Referring to organ failure as a “silent tsunami,” he emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle and taking preventive measures to reduce the risk of organ failure and promote overall well-being. Approximately 18 seminarians attended the awareness session. At the conclusion of the programme, Gift of Life flyers were distributed among the participants to further educate them about organ donation and encourage them to discuss the subject with their families and communities. The session was highly interactive and informative, helping the young seminarians understand the significance of organ donation and inspiring them to become ambassadors of this life-saving cause. |
