Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted at New India Assurance, Fort, Mumbai

An organ donation awareness session was conducted on May 7, 2026 at New India Assurance, Fort, Mumbai with the objective of educating the company staff about the significance of organ donation. The session was held between 2:15 PM and 3:00 PM and witnessed a participation of 21 attendees. The program was facilitated by MOHAN Foundation's team comprising Project Director Ms. Jaya Jairam, organ donation Ambassador Ms. Jayalakshmi Krishnan, and Intern Mr. Tanmay.

The session was initiated by Ms. Jaya Jairam, who began by assessing the participants' existing knowledge about organ donation. It was observed that a majority of the attendees already had a considerable understanding of the subject. Building upon this, She explained the life-saving impact of organ donation and clarified the difference between living donation and deceased donation, touching upon the legal framework, the family consent process, and the role of the Authorization Committee in cases of living organ donation.

Participants were introduced to the concepts of cardiac death and brain stem death. Ms. Jaya detailed the tissues that can be donated after cardiac death such as corneas, skin, heart valves, and bones and elaborated on the roles of eye banks and skin banks in tissue retrieval and preservation.

She further explained brain stem death, its causes, and the organs and tissues that can be retrieved in such situations. she proceeded to explain various key concepts related to organ donation in an engaging and interactive manner, pausing to ask concept-related questions to which participants responded actively and enthusiastically.

When asked about their thoughts on organ donation, participants shared a wide range of views. Several expressed positive sentiments such as saving lives and considering it a noble cause, while some also raised concerns regarding scams and the commercial use of organs. Ms. Jaya Jairam addressed these concerns by providing factual clarifications and dispelling common myths. The session also included the sharing of real-life stories of donors and recipients, which created a strong emotional connect with the participants. Organ donation ambassador Ms. Jayalakshmi Krishnan further contributed by explaining prevalent myths and facts related to organ donation.

The session remained highly interactive, with participants raising several thoughtful questions. Some key questions raised by the audience included:

1.)   Is it compulsory that the person should not have diabetes or any other comorbidities for organ donation?

 

2.)   Is MOHAN Foundation and organ donation available anywhere in India?

 

3.)   Do we need to stay alive for heart donation?

Ms. Jaya Jairam addressed each query in detail, helping dispel doubts and reinforcing accurate information.

The session concluded with participants being encouraged to take the Organ Donation Pledge by scanning a QR code. Prior to the session, there were no pledges from the company. Following the awareness program, 10 participants out of the 21 attendees came forward and took the pledge, reflecting a very positive and encouraging response to the initiative.
