MOHAN Foundation Conducts Awareness Session on Organ and Tissue Donation at Manipur State Eye Bank (MSEB)

On May 12, 2026, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ and tissue donation at the Outpatient Department (OPD) area of the Manipur State Eye Bank (MSEB), as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was conducted by Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation and she was accompanied by Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Manipur. The programme was conducted with the valuable support and coordination of Mr. K. Bamkinchandra Singh, Eye Donation Counsellor, MSEB.

 

Ms. Priya commenced the session by introducing the team and outlining the program objectives. She explained the concept of organ and tissue donation, clearly differentiating between living and deceased donation. Highlighting the acute shortage of donors in Manipur, she emphasized the significant gap between the demand for organs and tissues and their availability, largely due to low rates of deceased donation. She underscored that organ and tissue donation offers hope and a renewed chance at life for patients in need.

 

She informed participants that transplantation services are available in Manipur at the government institutions as well as the private hospitals. She further mentioned that the Manipur State Eye Bank also carries out corneal transplantation services in the state. She also highlighted the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, stressing that the buying and selling of organs and tissues is strictly prohibited and punishable by law. In addition, she informed participants that cornea donation can be carried out at home based. Addressing common myth, of a participant she reassured participants that organ and tissue donation does not cause disfigurement and that donor dignity is always maintained.

 

After the session, a participant also shared her feedback that, since cornea donation can be carried out through home-based retrieval, everyone should extend their support towards cornea donation. She further expressed her willingness to pledge for cornea donation after obtaining the consent of her family members.

 

The session concluded with Ms. Priya encouraging participants to pledge for organ donation, reiterating that one donor can save multiple lives. Informational FAQs were distributed, benefiting approximately 35 individuals.
