Awareness Session on Organ Donation conducted at Urology OPD, JNIMS |

On May 07, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Urology Out Patient Department (OPD), JNIMS, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was conducted by Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation Manipur, and attended by Mr. Bidyananda, Senior Program Executive, and Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation Manipur. Mr. Lirenthung Kithen, Project Lead, and Ms. Sedikeino Rino, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation Nagaland, also attended the session to observe the planning, preparation, and conduct of organ donation awareness sessions prior to undertaking similar activities in Nagaland.
Ms. Priya commenced the session by introducing the team and presenting a detailed overview of organ and tissue donation. She explained the different types of organs and tissues that can be donated and clarified the distinction between living and deceased donation. She emphasized the importance of organ transplantation in saving the lives of patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. She also highlighted that a single deceased donor can save up to eight lives, demonstrating the significant and far-reaching impact of organ donation on society.
Ms. Priya further explained the major provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, stressing that the commercial sale or purchase of human organs is strictly prohibited and punishable by law. She also described the procedure for pledging organs, detailing the process through which individuals can officially register themselves as donors. In addition, she emphasized the need for donors to communicate their decision to family members so that their wishes may be respected and carried out appropriately.
Mr. Paringanaba also engaged in an interactive discussion with the participants, addressing their queries and clarifying doubts related to living and deceased organ donation. The interaction contributed to a better understanding of the subject among the attendees. To further strengthen awareness and reinforce the key messages conveyed during the session, informational brochures on organ donation were distributed to all participants.
Close to 25 participants attended the session and gained better understanding about the importance and process of organ donation.
