Awareness Session on Organ Donation conducted at Eye OPD, JNIMS

On April 27, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Eye Out Patient Department (OPD), JNIMS, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was led by Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi and Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Program Executives at MOHAN Foundation.

 

Ms. Priya commenced the session by introducing the team and providing a comprehensive overview of organ donation. She explained the various organs that can be donated and clearly distinguished between living and deceased donations. She highlighted the life-saving significance of organ transplantation for individuals suffering from end-stage organ failure. She further emphasized that a single deceased donor has the potential to save up to eight lives, underscoring the far-reaching and transformative impact of organ donation on society.

 

Ms. Priya further elaborated on the key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, reiterating that any form of commercial transaction involving human organs is a punishable offence under the law. She also explained the procedure for organ pledging, outlining the steps individuals can follow to formally register as organ donors. Emphasizing the importance of family awareness, she encouraged participants to communicate their decision to ensure their wishes are respected and honoured. To reinforce the key messages of the session, FAQs on organ donation were distributed to the participants.

 

Approximately 15 individuals gained a better understanding the importance and process of organ donation.
