|
As part of its initiative to establish the AzhiyathaKolangal Club, MOHAN Foundation collaborated with Meenakshi College of Nursing, Mangadu, engaging 10 students in this start-up effort. On April 29, 2026, two awareness programmes were successfully conducted as part of this initiative. The day began with a community outreach programme held in Kozhumanivakkam,Mangadu, where around 30 women under the MGNREGA scheme participated. The gathering was facilitated by Mrs. Sheela Dhanasekaran, Panchayat President. This programme was initiated by the 3rd-year nursing students of Meenakshi College of Nursing with the objective of creating awareness on organ and eye donation. The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Fabiola, Principal of Meenakshi College of Nursing, who set a motivating tone for the programme. This was followed by an engaging Villupattu performance by the students, creatively conveying the importance of organ and eye donation and transplantation. Subsequently, Mrs.Kavitha Aneesh, Marketing Coordinator, spoke about lifestyle diseases, their prevention, and ways to maintain organ health. She concluded her session by reinforcing the importance of organ donation awareness. During the programme, Mrs. Deepa, one of the participants, shared her personal experience and expressed regret for not donating her mother-in-law’s organs after she was declared brain dead. In recognition of her openness and her effort to motivate others, MOHAN Foundation felicitated her. The Foundation also honoured Mrs. Jebin, faculty member of Meenakshi College of Nursing, for her support in organizing the programme. By the end of the programme, 2 individuals voluntarily pledged to become organ donors. Following the community session, an organ donation awareness programme was conducted at Meenakshi College of Nursing for 40 nursing students. The session began with Mrs. Arshiya, Senior Project Executive, who explained the concept of organ donation, including types of donation, the difference between coma and brain death, legal aspects, the process of pledging, and common myths and facts. During the session, students actively engaged by raising important questions regarding how patients are identified and placed on transplant waiting lists, whether a kidney can be arranged immediately in cases of critical kidney failure, the time limits for organ viability, and what happens if an organ is not transplanted within the stipulated time. This was followed by a session by Mrs.Kavitha Aneesh on family and grief counselling. She elaborated on the stages of grief and highlighted the crucial role of nurses in transplant coordination and supporting families during decision-making. As a follow-up initiative, 10 students were selected to undergo the “Angels of Change” course, enabling them to become advocates for organ donation awareness. MOHAN Foundation expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr.Fabiola and Mrs. Jebin for her continuous support, coordination, and initiative in establishing the Azhiyatha Kolangal Club and facilitating these impactful programmes.
