On April 7, 2026, MOHAN Foundation participated in the World Health Day 2026 programme organized by the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, under the theme “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” as part of Swachhata Pakhwada 2026.
The programme was led by Prof. Y. Govindaraj Singh from the Department of Physiology, RIMS. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) and Project Lead (Manipur), represented MOHAN Foundation at the event.
The session was conducted at the New Outpatient Department (OPD), Medicine Ward, and Surgery Ward of RIMS. During the session, Ms. Monica introduced the concept of organ and tissue donation and engaged participants in an interactive discussion to assess their awareness and perceptions. She provided a comprehensive overview of organ and tissue donation, explaining the various organs and tissues that can be donated and clearly distinguishing between living and deceased donation.
She also highlighted the current status and progress of organ donation in Manipur, informing participants about available transplantation centres and the growing need for increased public participation, especially in deceased donation. The legal and ethical aspects were discussed with reference to the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, emphasizing that the buying and selling of organs is illegal and punishable by law.
Common myths and misconceptions were addressed, reassuring participants that donation is carried out with respect and dignity. The session concluded with guidance on how to pledge for organ donation, and informational pamphlets along with toll-free helpline numbers were distributed.
Close to 150 individuals acquired knowledge on organ and tissue donation and participated actively, indicating a positive response and improved understanding of organ and tissue donation.
