Organ Donation Awareness Talk at Shri Kamaxidevi Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Shiroda, Goa |
|
On April 6, 2026, an organ donation awareness session was conducted for the faculty of Shri Kamaxidevi Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Shiroda, Goa, to mark World Homoeopathy Day. The session was delivered by Mr. Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador for MOHAN Foundation. Mr. Pereira was introduced by a faculty member, following which the Officiating Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Roshani R. Shirwaikar, briefly addressed the gathering. She noted that Mr. Pereira had previously interacted with her to understand procedures related to whole-body donation. The session began with an interactive question posed to the audience regarding the possibility of organ donation in the event of death at home. Responses varied, allowing Mr. Pereira to clarify that in cases of circulatory death, only tissue donation—such as skin and corneas—and whole-body donation are feasible. He explained that organ donation is possible only after a person is declared brain dead, followed by consent from the family and next of kin, and subject to medical suitability of the organs. Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira explained the legal aspects of organ donation in India and highlighted the roles of NOTTO, ROTTO, and SOTTO. He also screened an educational video on brain death and shared the case of Ms. Shreya Siddangowder, India’s first double hand transplant recipient, along with her testimonial. The session remained highly interactive, with participants responding to questions about transplant hospitals in Goa and the types of transplants conducted in the state. Selected participants were acknowledged with MOHAN Foundation keychains. At the end of the session, 50 “Frequently Asked Questions” flyers on organ donation were distributed. Mr. Pereira informed the faculty that a video of the presentation would be shared with Dr. Kautuk Bhatikar, Hospital Administrator, for further circulation among staff, family members, and the wider community. The session concluded with a vote of thanks, with Mr. Pereira expressing his appreciation to Prof. (Dr.) Roshani R. Shirwaikar, the faculty, and Dr. Kautuk Bhatikar for the opportunity to promote awareness on organ donation |
