The Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab State Branch, organized a four-day residential First Aid Training Programme at Chandigarh University, Gharuan, Punjab, from March 10–13, 2026. The programme featured a State Ambulance Competition and practical training sessions, equipping university volunteers and nursing students with essential emergency response skills.

On March 11, 2026, the SRDF–MOHAN Foundation was invited by Dr. Shaina Verma, Senior State Training Supervisor, to conduct an awareness session on organ donation.

Mrs. Preeti Gupta, Program Officer of MF–SRDF, addressed the gathering and emphasized organ donation as a “gift of life.” She presented regional statistics, particularly focusing on Punjab, and highlighted the urgent need for awareness in northern India.

The session comprehensively covered:

  • Concept and Impact of Organ & Tissue Donation – How donation saves lives.
  • Status of Organ Donation in India – Current demand versus donation rates.
  • Comparative Statistics – India’s position globally and across states.
  • Opt-Out Policy – Brief overview for clarity.
  • Types of Donation – Live related and live unrelated donations.
  • Medical Clarifications – Distinctions between natural death, brain death, and coma.
  • Myths vs Facts – Evidence-based responses to common misconceptions.
  • Real-Life Stories – Case studies of successful transplants.
  • Donor Card & Pledge Process – Importance of carrying a donor card and registering with NOTTO.

The session was attended by approximately 150 NSS volunteers. The format was interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions and seeking clarifications. Many expressed keen interest and motivation to pledge for organ donation.

The initiative successfully achieved its intended outcomes by significantly enhancing awareness among NSS volunteers regarding the importance of organ donation. Participants were encouraged to register with NOTTO and to actively promote organ donation within their communities, thereby extending the impact beyond the university setting.

The programme received highly positive feedback from both professors and students, who appreciated the relevance of the content and the dedicated efforts of MF–SRDF in delivering such a meaningful and impactful awareness session.

This initiative proved to be a significant step in instilling values of compassion and social responsibility among students. Beyond education, the session inspired youth to become advocates of organ donation. The expected ripple effect is increased awareness within the wider community, contributing to a healthier and more humane society.

MF–SRDF – MOHAN Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab State Branch, for their support and for providing the opportunity to conduct this impactful session.
