|
On March 6, 2026, the MOHAN Foundation team conducted an orientation session for the Nursing Department at ACS Medical College and Hospital, Velappanchavadi. The session aimed to create awareness among students who would be participating in the upcoming rangoli competition organised by MOHAN Foundation. A total of 130 nursing department students participated in the session. All students were given information brochures on eye donation, organ donation and lung health. The session began with Ms Kanishka, Project Executive, explaining the concepts of eye donation. She highlighted the need for eye donation, explained corneal blindness, the cornea transplantation process, and the importance of eye donation. She also addressed common myths and facts related to eye donation. This was followed by Mrs Arshiya Fathima, Senior Project Executive, who spoke about organ donation and its importance. She explained the retrieval time of organs, the difference between brain death and coma, and clarified myths and facts related to organ donation. She further explained the role of nurses in organ transplantation and introduced grief counselling and transplant coordinator as a career option for students. She also explained how students can become transplant coordinators. Later, a short video on brain death was screened for the students to help them gain a clearer understanding of the concept in scientific and medical terms. The video explained how brain death occurs, the medical criteria used to confirm it, and how it differs from conditions such as coma. This helped the students better understand the importance of brain death in the process of organ donation and transplantation. Questions such as whether an already transplanted heart or other organs can be transplanted again, how individuals can contribute to organ transplantation, whether a child’s organs can be donated to adults, and why organ donation is not commonly done after circulatory death were raised by the students. All these doubts were clarified by MOHAN Foundation during the session. Dr. Hema V. H., Principal of the Nursing Department, presented her poem on eye donation and encouraged the students to actively participate and perform well in the upcoming competition. She conveyed her best wishes to the students. The MOHAN Foundation team expressed their sincere thanks to Dr. Hema V.H for her coordination and for providing the opportunity to conduct the session. |
