|
On February 25, 2026, MOHAN Foundation conducted an organ donation awareness session for the nursing staff at MAX Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun. This session marked the first in a planned series aimed at sensitizing nursing officers at the hospital about organ donation and transplantation. The session was led by Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand, and was attended by nursing staff from the Department of Critical Care.
The session commenced with an introduction to the MOHAN Foundation, outlining its mission, objectives, and ongoing initiatives in the field of organ donation. Mr. Arora then delivered a comprehensive presentation on organ donation and its significance, covering key aspects such as the importance of organ donation and eligibility criteria; the distinction between living and deceased donors; organ donation during life and after death; the concept of brain death and how it differs from coma; eye and skin donation, including the steps required to preserve corneas after death; an overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994; living kidney transplantation facilities at AIIMS Rishikesh; practical steps individuals can take to support the cause; and common myths and facts surrounding organ donation.
Mr. Arora emphasized the urgent need for increased organ donation in India and encouraged participants to initiate conversations on the subject with their families and friends to help create a ripple effect of awareness within the community.
The session was interactive, with participants raising several pertinent questions. These included the time available for families to make a decision at the time of death; the duration of the organ donation procedure; the legal documentation required for pledging; age-related eligibility for organ donors; the role of nursing officers in organ donation cases; whether an individual can pledge on behalf of a family member; and whether families willing to donate organs can directly approach the nursing team.
Feedback and Participation Participants expressed appreciation for the session and acknowledged its impact. One participant shared, “The session inspired me to speak with my own family and friends about organ donation and encourage them to support this cause.” Several attendees conveyed their willingness to actively discuss and promote organ donation within their personal and professional circles.
Approximately 35 nursing staff members attended the session. Notably, eight participants pledged to donate their organs on the spot through the NOTTO website.
