Changing Perceptions: Organ Donation Awareness Drive by MOHAN Foundation at Care Hospital-Nagpur

On January 28, 2026, MOHAN Foundation conducted ‘Gift of Life’ Organ Donation Awareness session at Care Hospital, Panchsheel Square, Nagpur, as part of its ongoing hospital-based public education activities. The session was organized in the OPD waiting hall with the objective of sensitising patients’ relatives and hospital staff about Organ and Tissue donation in a simple and interactive manner.

Mr. Dhiraj Kurve, Transplant Coordinator, GMCH-Nagpur led the session and began by explaining the basic concept of organ donation, who can donate, which organs and tissues can be donated, and clarified that organ donation is legal in India when done as per the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act and related rules. He highlighted key points such as brain stem death, the difference between coma and brain death, the role of the hospital and MOHAN Foundation, and important factors families should consider while deciding about organ donation. This was followed by an explanation of the counselling process, including how families are approached, how their questions are addressed, and the voluntary nature of consent, after which attendees were encouraged to pledge for organ donation.

The session was designed as a two‑way communication, where Mr. Dhiraj invited questions from patients’ relatives and addressed common doubts and misconceptions in a question‑and‑answer format, similar to other MOHAN Foundation OPD awareness initiatives. Queries regarding religious beliefs, age limits, medical fitness, procedures after death, and the process of registering as a donor were discussed, helping participants gain clarity and confidence about organ donation.

Ms. Veena then spoke about the work of MOHAN Foundation, including its role in public awareness, transplant coordination training, and support to hospitals, and explained how, through grants and donor support, financial assistance can sometimes be facilitated for needy patients requiring transplants. She also guided the audience on how to register for organ donation, including available online platforms and pledge forms.

Ms. Shubhangi Pokale, representing the Transplant Coordinator at Care Hospital, further oriented the relatives about the hospital’s processes related to organ donation and reassured them about the coordination between the treating team, transplant coordinators, and MOHAN Foundation.

Nearly 35 people attended the session. MOHAN Foundation thanked Ms. Shubhangi Pokale for the opportunity and support to noble cause.
