The session was organised by Mr. Anuj Nagpal, CII Chapter Lead, Gurugram. Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, NCR, MOHAN Foundation, served as the resource person and was accompanied by Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, NCR, MOHAN Foundation. The session was coordinated by Mr. Ravindra S. Bhati, Plant HR Head, CAPARO Maruti Ltd.
Mr. Ravindra S. Bhati introduced the session and the MOHAN Foundation team to the participants, following which Ms. Pallavi Kumar provided an overview of the organ donation scenario in India.
The key aspects covered during the session included: • The significance of organ donation • Eligibility to become an organ donor • Organ donation during life and after death • The difference between brain death and coma • The process of eye donation and corneal preservation after death • Legal provisions under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994 • Common myths and facts related to organ donation • Body donation • Donor case studies
Ms. Pallavi highlighted that India ranks third globally in living organ donations. She also shared her personal experiences, including consenting to the donation of her late father’s corneas, donating her mother-in-law’s skin to the Safdarjung Skin Bank, and her body to ESIC Hospital and Medical College, Faridabad.
She further explained that India follows an opt-in system for organ donation, wherein individuals are not considered donors by default and must voluntarily pledge their consent.
The session was followed by an interactive discussion, during which participants raised several questions and shared their perspectives and understanding. Key questions included: • Is India’s healthcare system advanced enough to ensure timely transplants? • If certain medicines are harmful to organs, why are they prescribed by doctors? • Can Ayurveda prevent organ failure, and if so, why is it not integrated into the mainstream healthcare system? • Are organ procurement and allocation processes fully digital?
Approximately 25 members attended the programme.
