Organ Donation Awareness Talk at St. Jerome Church, Mapusa, Goa |
|
On January 4, 2026, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador from MOHAN Foundation, delivered an organ donation awareness talk to the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) of St. Jerome Church, Mapusa, Goa. Mr. Gabriel introduced himself as an Organ Donation Ambassador and shared his mission to educate and encourage people to say yes to organ donation, inspired by his family member’s experience with kidney failure. During the session, he asked the audience whether organs could be donated in the event of a death at home, to which most participants responded affirmatively. Mr. Gabriel clarified that in the case of a home death, organs cannot be donated; however, tissue donation or whole-body donation is still possible. He further explained that while many individuals may wish to become organ donors, only a small number will be declared brain dead, which is a prerequisite for organ donation. Mr. Gabriel also highlighted the role of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) in Goa and shared information on the number of patients currently on the organ transplant waiting list in the state. He noted that, at present, kidney and corneal transplants are the only transplant procedures conducted in Goa. At the conclusion of the session, flyers containing frequently asked questions, along with a QR code for pledging to donate, were distributed to all 60 attendees. Additionally, two individuals collected donor cards. Mr. Gabriel concluded the session by expressing his sincere gratitude to Rev. Fr. Leonardo Moraes, Parish Priest, and Rev. Fr. Savio Pinto, Assistant Parish Priest of St. Jerome Church, Mapusa, for providing him the opportunity to address the community on the important subject of organ donation. |
