Observation Visit at MOHAN Foundation by Students from Karve Institute of Social Service, Pune

MOHAN Foundation hosted an observation visit for students from the Karve Institute of Social Service, Pune, on December 15, 2025. A total of 15 students along with one faculty supervisor participated in the visit. The session began with a warm welcome and a brief introduction to MOHAN Foundation and its team by Dr Hemal Kanvinde. This was followed by a short self-introduction by the Karve Institute students. Ms Sayali S Kulkarni, Faculty Supervisor from the Karve Institute, felicitated Dr Hemal, and in return, Dr Hemal presented a small token of appreciation to Ms Sayali.

The first session focused on an overview of MOHAN Foundation’s website. The students were introduced to key features such as the toll-free helpline number, open educational resources, internship opportunities across different states, and the process of pledging for organ donation. This session helped students understand how the Foundation disseminates information and engages with the public.

The next session was delivered by Mrs Sujatha, Associate Director – Courses, who spoke about the journey of MOHAN Foundation. She traced the Foundation’s beginnings through the founders’ vision and elaborated on the guiding philosophy of “Let no organ be wasted.” She also explained the National Network for Organ Sharing (NNOS) and its collaboration with government bodies, the Transplant Coordination Training Initiative, and the Anudaan programme aimed at making transplants more affordable. The session concluded with an overview of the achievements and awards received by MOHAN Foundation over the years.

Following this, a session on cornea donation was conducted by Ms Kanishka. She explained what the cornea is and discussed the causes of corneal blindness, highlighting why and how eye donation can help restore vision. Key facts on eye donation were shared to provide a clear understanding of the importance of cornea donation.

The next session was led by Dr Hemal Kanvinde and covered the fundamentals of organ donation. She discussed ethical considerations, the concept of brainstem death, common myths and facts related to organ donation, the process of pledging, and the various bodies governing transplantation in India. This session helped students build a strong conceptual foundation.

A question-and-answer session followed, during which students asked questions related to eligibility criteria for organ donation, how are people selected in the waiting list, the opt-in and opt-out systems, and government schemes supporting organ transplantation.

The next session was conducted by Dr Rajalakshmi Ravi of the TANKER Foundation. She introduced the organisation and its work to support patients with Kidney failure. She spoke of the kidneys and their functions. She spoke about kidney care, causes of kidney damage, and concluded with an overview of the kidney transplantation process.

Subsequently, Mr Hariharan, a kidney transplant recipient, shared his personal journey. He spoke about the challenges he faced before and after transplantation and described how difficult the process was for him and his family. His testimony highlighted the life-changing impact of organ donation and motivated students by showing the real-world significance of their awareness efforts.

The observation visit concluded with Dr Hemal Kanvinde expressing her gratitude to the Karve Institute students and faculty for choosing MOHAN Foundation for their observation visit and for their active participation throughout the sessions.
