MOHAN Foundation Conducts Awareness Session on Deceased Organ Donation at Babina Multispeciality Hospital, Khabeisoi

On December 23, 2025, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on deceased organ donation at Babina Multispeciality Hospital, Khabeisoi. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) and Project Lead (Manipur), MOHAN Foundation, served as the Resource Person for the session. She was accompanied by Mr. Victor Rajkumar, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation.

The session was coordinated by Dr. Nomita Keisham, Clinical Psychologist and Transplant Coordinator, and began with a welcome address and introduction by Ms. Memthoibi Ningthoujam, Assistant Manager, Babina Multispeciality Hospital, who formally welcomed the MOHAN Foundation team.

Ms. Monica provided an overview of MOHAN Foundation and its ongoing efforts to promote organ donation in Manipur and the wider Northeast region. The session focused on equipping hospital nurses with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the organ donation process. She explained the two types of organ donation—living and deceased—highlighting the limitations of living donation and the vital role deceased donation plays in saving multiple lives. She also discussed the medical concept of brain death, organs that can be retrieved from a brain-dead donor, and the life-changing impact of organ donation for recipients waiting for transplants.

Further, Ms. Monica emphasized the critical role hospitals play in raising community-level awareness and encouraging organ donation. She urged hospital authorities to establish systems that enable timely identification and declaration of brain stem death as part of the clinical workflow.

In the concluding segment of the session, Ms. Monica explained the procedure for pledging to become an organ donor. Two staff nurses expressed interest in enrolling in the Post Graduate Diploma in Transplant Coordination and Grief Counselling offered by MOHAN Foundation.

A total of 35 participants, including medical officers and nurses, attended the session and benefitted from a deeper understanding of the organ donation process and their institutional roles in facilitating it.
