Organ Donation Awareness Talk for Lokmat Saki Members at Amshekar Hospital, Valpoi, Goa |
|
On December 19, 2025, Gabriel Pereira, an organ donation ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, was invited by Ms Geeta Daawan to conduct an organ donation awareness talk for members of Lokmat Saki. The programme was held at Amshekar Hospital in Valpoi, Satteri, Goa.
Gabriel had earlier met Ms Geeta Daawan at the Valpoi Marathon that month. During their interaction, she shared that Dr Ashok Amshekar, the founder of the Valpoi Marathon and proprietor of Amshekar Hospital, marks his birthday each year by organising a blood donation camp. She also conveyed that he had graciously agreed to host an organ donation awareness session as part of the celebrations. Amshekar Hospital is a multi-speciality healthcare facility providing diagnostic services such as X-ray, ECG, and ultrasound.
Prior to the commencement of the talk, a film on organ donation produced by ROTTO–SOTTO, Mumbai, was screened for the attendees.
Mr Umesh Dhavalikar, a liver transplant recipient, shared his inspiring journey and spoke about receiving the gift of life from his sister. He highlighted his participation in both national and international transplant games, through which he has brought recognition to Goa and India.
Gabriel then interacted with the audience, sharing information on the current organ transplant waiting list in Goa and outlining the licensed transplant hospitals in the state. He explained that kidney and corneal transplants are presently the only transplant procedures performed in Goa. He further noted that following eight brain-death declarations, 16 patients in Goa have received kidney transplants. Other organs, including the heart, lungs, and liver, have been allocated through the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO). He also explained the role of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) in managing organ allocation within individual states.
To reinforce awareness, approximately 30 informational flyers addressing frequently asked questions on organ donation were distributed, resulting in seven attendees pledging to become organ donors.
At the conclusion of the programme, Gabriel expressed his sincere appreciation to Ms Geeta Daawan, Dr Ashok Amshekar, and Mr Umesh Dhavalikar for their support and cooperation in making the event a success.
