Chennai chapter of Friends of Tribals support organ donation

A worldwide organization called Friends of Tribals provides health and education support to isolated tribes. On November 17, 2025, the Mahila Samiti of the Chennai Chapter hosted a discussion about organ donation. The MOHAN Foundation received an invitation to speak on organ and tissue donation. Dr Hemal Kanvinde Q&A Officer and Mr Ganesh, Senior Project Executive represented MOHAN Foundation.

There were about 38 people in attendance. A green ribbon and informational pamphlets about organ donation, lung health, and eye donation were distributed to each person. Dr. Hemal discussed organ health, the high prevalence of diabetes, and kidney failure in India with the members. She then discussed the process and timing of corneal donation. More than four members provided feedback on the procedure and had corneal donors in their families. The idea of skin donation was then described. For the crowd, it was a fresh concept. Members received information about voluntary body donation.

Dr. Hemal next discussed organ donation, different deaths recognised by law.  She spoke of the what, when, and how donation is possible. She reiterated that family discussions are crucial after making a commitment to donate. She also provided information on organ donation. The distinction between brain death and coma. A vibrant conversation and sharing of individual experiences took place. Age for donation, coma and brain death, whether ICU patients can donate, and the restrictions on organ and eye donation were among the topics of debate.
