An organ donation awareness session was organized for NSS students at IIT Bombay on Saturday, 11th October 2025, at 10:30 a.m.On this day, an informative session on Organ and Eye Donation was conducted at IIT Bombay. The program was organized by the NSS Unit of IIT Bombay under the guidance of Aashi Ma’am. Ms. Jaya Jairam, Project Director of MOHAN Foundation, Mumbai, was invited as the guest speaker for the day. She was accompanied by Ms. Ashwini Gawde, a counsellor from MOHAN Foundation. The session for the NSS students began at 10:30 a.m. with Ms. Jaya introducing MOHAN Foundation — explaining its mission, the various projects it is working on, and highlighting that the organization has been serving for the past 28 years. Before delving into the main topic of organ donation, she engaged the students in an interactive discussion to make them comfortable and participative. She asked, “Do you know what organ donation is? When can a person donate — while alive or after death?” and encouraged students to respond by raising their hands. Ms. Jaya then explained the meaning of organ donation and the two main types of donors — living and deceased. She discussed whether there is any age limit for donation and clarified such doubts with real-life examples. She also presented a PowerPoint presentation showing which organs can be donated during life and which can be donated after death, along with relevant visuals. She elaborated on the types of death related to organ donation — Brain Stem Death and Cardiac Death — and explained the difference between coma and brain death, a topic often misunderstood. Ms. Jaya further discussed how different countries handle organ donation through systems like presumed consent, opt-in, and opt-out methods. She highlighted how India still has a relatively low organ donation rate compared to global statistics. She took time to address and dispel many common myths and misconceptions surrounding organ and eye donation. The students were encouraged to think deeply and ask questions. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students raised queries regarding the time limits for organ transplantation, skin donation from home, and eye donation. Each question was answered with factual clarity by Ms. Jaya Jairam. A total of 85 students attended the session, making it a great success. The NSS students of IIT Bombay expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Jaya Jairam (Project Director) for her engaging and insightful presentation and thanked her for organizing such a valuable awareness program.
