MOHAN Foundation Conducts Awareness Session on Organ and Eye Donation in Association with RIMS |
On September 6, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), organized an awareness session on organ and eye donation for the non-teaching staff at the Seminar Hall, Ophthalmology Department. The program was held as part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight, observed this year under the theme “Everyday Heroes.”
The session was led by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) & Project Lead (Manipur), and Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Y. Chingsuingamba Meitei, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, with the support of Dr. Memota Laishram, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Chongtham Pritam, Medical Social Worker, RIMS.
The event began with a welcome address by Ms. Pritam, followed by introductory remarks from Dr. Meitei, who reflected on the theme “Everyday Heroes.” He stressed the urgent need for accurate knowledge about organ and eye donation and emphasized the importance of spreading awareness on this noble cause.
Ms. Monica delivered an engaging presentation introducing MOHAN Foundation and its initiatives in Imphal. She shared national and global statistics, highlighted India’s low donation rates, and explained key concepts such as brainstem death versus coma. She addressed myths and misconceptions, encouraged participants to pledge and carry a donor card, and shared inspiring donor stories from India and Manipur. She concluded by affirming that organ donation transcends religion, caste, and creed.
Dr. Memota then gave an in-depth presentation on the eye donation process. Using photographs and case examples, she explained the retrieval procedure, its significance in restoring vision, and practical challenges from her professional experience. Her insights helped participants gain a deeper understanding of the impact of eye donation.
Informational pamphlets on organ donation were distributed to all participants. Nearly 50 non-teaching staff members of the Ophthalmology Department attended the session, many of whom expressed their willingness to support and participate in future organ donation initiatives.
