Awareness Session Conducted at Sushrut Hospital, Chembur, Mumbai |
An Awareness Session on Organ Donation was conducted on August 14, 2025, at Sushrut Hospital, Chembur. The session was led by the distinguished speaker Mrs. Jaya Jairam, Project Director at MOHAN Foundation, a leading NGO promoting organ donation in India. The session was attended by around 60 participants, including hospital staff, nurses, doctors, the Medical Advisor, and the Admin Head. The event was coordinated by Mrs. Trupti Shinde, Transplant Coordinator at the hospital. Mrs. Jaya Jairam began by warmly welcoming the healthcare professionals present and set an interactive tone for the session, encouraging questions and discussions. She introduced the mission and objectives of MOHAN Foundation, followed by a detailed explanation of organ donation—including who can donate and the types of donations (living and deceased). She explained the organs and tissues that can be donated during living organ donation, such as one kidney, a portion of the liver, lungs, and pancreas, and outlined the protocols followed in such cases. Mrs. Jairam then introduced the concepts of cardiac death and brain stem death. She described the process and implications of cardiac death, including tissue donation, and provided insights into cornea retrieval and the role of the eye bank. A significant portion of the session was dedicated to explaining brain stem death—its causes, the organ and tissue donation process, the role of family consent, and the creation of a green corridor for organ transport. She emphasized that one brain stem dead donor can save up to 8 to 9 lives, highlighting the life-saving potential of deceased organ donation. Mrs. Jairam also presented comparative data on India's status in organ donation globally and the organ donation rate per million population, stressing the urgent need to increase deceased donations to bridge the gap between organ demand and availability. She addressed common myths and barriers surrounding organ donation, provided information on how to pledge organs, and explained the importance of carrying a donor card. Participants were also informed about the toll-free helpline operated by MOHAN Foundation. During the Q&A session, participants raised queries about organ donation from patients on life support and the role of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) in organ allocation. The session was highly interactive and informative, with participants, especially doctors, showing keen interest. Audio-visual clips showcasing the honor given to deceased organ donors, brain stem death awareness, and appreciation certificates were featured, adding emotional and educational value. The session concluded with a token of appreciation presented to Mrs. Jaya Jairam, followed by the felicitation of hospital staff for their dedication and service. |
