An Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Maharashi Dayanad College, Parel, Mumbai

On August 6, 2025, an organ donation awareness session was organized at Maharshi Dayanand college , Parel educating college students.  Total 8 sessions were conducted for the students from various specialization.  Around 800 students attended the session. The session was supported by NSS head Ms Shubhada Madam and a team of around 10 volunteers from NSS unit of the college.

The session began with an introduction on MOHAN Foundation by Ms Sakshi Khirsagar. She briefed the students on the key projects run by MOHAN foundation.

She began the talk explaining their understanding about organ donation. She cleared the concept about what organ donation? Who are the donor and recipient?

She defined organ donation very clearly. Later, she differentiated about living and deceased donations, consent of the family, what can be donated in living donations. Ms Sakshi elaborated the process of living organ donation highlighting the authorization committee involved.  She clarified the protocol to be followed in living organ donation.

She also introduced participants about cardiac death and Brain stem death. She explained how cardiac death occurs. She cleared all the tissues that can be donated under cardiac death. She explained the students about corneal donation, skin donation, heart valves and bones donation. She also emphasized on the eye bank and skin bank involved in the process of tissue donation.

Later she elaborated more on brain stem death. Ms Sakshi ensured the participants asking various questions on their understanding of Brain stem Death. She explained what causes brain stem death.  She informed the organs and tissues that can be donated, process of donation, green corridor and family consent. 

In the last part of the session she explained about the THOA act  regulating organ donation, ZTCC, patient waiting list and Indian scenario in terms of organ donation.

Mrs. Rajeshree Chandankar discussed on myths and facts on organ donation. She discussed prevalent myths in the society and the facts associated.  The talk was ended with the importance of pledge, informing family about the pledge, how one can pledge and save lives.

It was an engaging session attended carefully by the students. Students present were keen to understand the concept of Gift of life one can give through organ donation.
