MOHAN Foundation Participates in the Observance of World Organ Donation Day 2025 at Shija Hospital & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., Imphal, Manipur |
On August 13, 2025, MOHAN Foundation participated in the observance of World Organ Donation Day at Shija Hospital & Research Institute (SHRI) Pvt. Ltd., Langol, Imphal West, Manipur. Representing the Foundation were Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) and Project Lead (Manipur), Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive, and Mrs. Thaudem Mayarani Devi, Program Executive.
The programme was graced by several distinguished dignitaries: • Chief Guest: Dr. Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services, Manipur • Guests of Honour: Dr. K. Vikram Singh, State Nodal Officer, National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), NHM, Manipur; and Dr. N. Shugeta Devi, Deputy Director (Public Health), Directorate of Health Services, Manipur • President of the Function: Dr. Palin Khundongbam, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, SHRI
A felicitation ceremony for the resource persons was held before the formal proceedings began.
The welcome and keynote address on organ donation was delivered by Dr. Guliver Potsangbam, Consultant Nephrologist, SHRI. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Somorendro Paonam, Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon, SHRI, who spoke on the “Journey in Kidney Transplantation at Shija Hospital.” Dr. Sachindra Laishram, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Shija Eye Care Foundation, shared his experiences and insights from the field of corneal transplantation.
Ms. Laishram Monica Devi of MOHAN Foundation delivered a talk on the “Journey of Deceased Organ Donation in Manipur.” Through pictorial records, she highlighted the milestones achieved by key stakeholders leading to the state’s first deceased organ and cornea donation.
In their addresses, Dr. Chambo Gonmei emphasized the importance of strengthening Manipur’s organ donation system, while Dr. K. Vikram Singh and Dr. N. Shugeta Devi stressed the need for greater public awareness and stronger institutional collaboration. Dr. Shugeta noted that Shija Hospital has conducted 119 of the 187 renal transplants performed in the state, and urged that it was time to also focus on deceased organ donation. Dr. Palin Khundongbam underscored the importance of advanced medical expertise, active community engagement, and supportive policies to further strengthen the organ donation movement in the region.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Mahele Maharabam. Approximately 150 healthcare professionals attended the event, marking a significant step forward in promoting organ donation and transplantation awareness in Manipur.
