MOHAN Foundation Participates in Organ Donation Month Observance at Babina Hospital, Khabeisoi, Imphal

On July 19, 2025, MOHAN Foundation participated in the Organ Donation Month observance at Babina Hospital, Khabeisoi, Imphal, Manipur. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) and Project Lead (Manipur) at MOHAN Foundation, was invited as a key speaker. She was accompanied by Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive, and Mrs. Thaudem Mayarani Devi, Program Executive.

 

The program, organised to mark Organ Donation Month, was coordinated by Dr. Nomita Keisham, Clinical Psychologist and Transplant Coordinator at Babina Hospital. Present at the event were Dr. Thangjam Dhabali Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Babina Hospital, and Dr. Laishram Shyamkumar, Paediatrician and Medical Superintendent, along with hospital staff.

 

Ms. Monica introduced MOHAN Foundation and highlighted its work in promoting organ donation in the region. She delivered a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation covering key aspects of organ donation, including the types of donations, the organ donation landscape in India and Manipur, and the mandatory guidelines by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) for the declaration of brain stem death (BSD) in hospitals. She also discussed the organs and tissues that can be donated after BSD and circulatory death.

 

A video on brain death was shown to enhance participant understanding. Ms. Monica emphasized the need for hospitals to take an active role in raising awareness about organ donation within the community. She urged the hospital authorities to implement systems for identifying and declaring brain stem death.

 

She explained the process of pledging to be an organ donor and highlighted the life-saving potential of each donation.

 

The session concluded with a discussion on potential collaboration between MOHAN Foundation and Babina Hospital to strengthen organ donation advocacy and support systems. Participants raised questions about cornea donation and expressed concern over the low organ donation rates. Ms. Monica addressed these concerns by explaining the process of cornea donation and underscoring the need for increased public awareness and participation.

 

Toward the end of the program, Dr. Thangjam Dhabali Singh appreciated Ms. Monica for her impactful session. He asked the audience if they were ready to bring about change in the field of organ donation. In response, all participants raised their hands, signifying their support and commitment to the cause.

 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on organ donation were distributed to all attendees to further enhance their understanding. Around 60 participants attended the session and gained valuable insights into the importance of organ donation.
